Shape your future now with the Hospital Care Improvement Act and funds for transformation

The Hospital Care Improvement Act: Why hospital management must act now

The Hospital Care Improvement Act (KHVVG) has come into force and will significantly change the German hospital landscape. The introduction of new payments in the inpatient sector and “service groups” based on coherent quality criteria presents hospital managers with unprecedented challenges - but also with great opportunities. Up to 50 billion euros are available. However, access to this funding places high demands on hospitals.

UNITY - Your holistic partner for the Hospital Care Improvement Act and the transformation fund

What does the transformation fund mean for your hospital?

The transformation fund provides up to 50 billion euros over a period of 10 years, financed by statutory health insurance and the federal states. These funds support projects such as the concentration of acute inpatient care capacities, the closure of hospitals in regions with a high density, the reduction of duplicate structures and the transformation of hospitals into cross-sector care facilities.

Secure financial resources from the transformation fund!

Funding for eligible projects, e. g. the concentration of acute inpatient care facilities or the formation of cross-sector care facilities, centers or alliences can be secured by an application process. Due to the long-term effects and complexity of the projects, comprehensive expertise is required at the application stage.

Miriam Golis, business area lead heathcare, and Markus Funk, spokesman of the St. Vincenz clinics´ management, sat down to talk about the hospital reform. In this exiting conversation, Markus Funk delivers us insights into his view of the reform. On the one hand, it could be an important step in the right direction, on the other hand, there are critical points that should not be overlooked.

Pro: Potential for change and further development in the healthcare sector
Con: No analysis of the impacts, lack of simulations and economic challenges - and shouldn´t the boundaries of the sector finally be abolished?

It remains exiting: What does this all mean for medium-sized clinics?

  • What clinics will now have to face

New models for payment such as the compensation of costs for personnel and the infrastructrure ("Vorhaltevergütung") are intended to create financial stability, but require an strategic realignment. At the same time, topics such as outpatient care, increasing efficiency and digitalization are becoming increasingly important. Hospitals must act early to prepare for the new requirements. This includes adapted financial planning, optimized processes to reduce bureaucracy and the strategic development of models for outpatient care.
